Rethinking Sisterlocks and Natural Hair

How are you guys feeling today. I feel great! It is a blessing to be alive. I will say that I am having the urge to do something drastic with my hair again. I have though about joining my locks to make them bigger. I know, I know, I'd be "sellin out" if I do it but I am feeling like embracing a wilder, more uninhibited me, ya know!

Do get me wrong, I am still pro Sisterlocks but I guess I want to look more like a "bush woman" lol Sisterlocks are so corporate or "establishment" to me now. I think it is a great level to be on and I have enjoyed the ride, but I am not afraid of being frizzy anymore...

Most of my clients are doing the corporate gigs so they have to look acceptable in those circles but they still want to be natural, so they choose Sisterlocks. Could this be conformity in a subtle way? I've just been thinking about it a little deeper.

To be honest I wouldn't mind just being a beach bum wearing wife beaters and flip-flops while sucking down coconut water and sun bathing. Whew, no more late night banana-pineapple smoothies for me anymore. I think its got me a little high...lol

I think I'd cry if I gave up my Sl's

What do you think?

Well, as a former client of yours while in Macon, I always admired your Sisterlocks, but was afraid to make that commitment. Now after 3 years of being natural, I think I want to join the ranks of SL nation!

As far as you going bigger with your locks, weigh it out and do what you feel. You are your own boss, so you have the option. But for many, I do think it depends on what type of work they do and environment they work in. It sad that we are sometimes bound by that, but that's the world we live in.

Your Sisterlocks are beautiful but if you are feeling the need to change then you have to explore those feelings.
Are S.L.'s conforming??????? Well, I don't feel that way about mine. Styling them with no restrictions is the main attraction for me and others I know.

hey there sister!

i never had sisterlocks, but about 3 years ago, i did take a leap of faith and join my locks together...and i haven't regretted it!

as i chose to let my hair grow longer, my locs started to thin out and my hair wasn't as full as i wanted it to be. i was caught between cutting my locs off and starting over or tryng to join them together.

i did a trial run and wore my locs 2 strand twisted for 2 weeks to see if i really would like them joined...and i just never took them out.

now i feel like i can focus on growing my hair longer, without my locs becoming weak and breaking off.

so my suggestion is to see if you like them joined by wearing them twisted together for a week or so.

great to see that you're still out there doing your thing.

peace!

For a woman that doesn't have sisterlocks, but really wants them, I don't think Sisterlocks is conforming.

Growing up I actually always felt that relaxing my hair was conforming, with that whole 'good' hair, 'bad' hair thing. I'd feel Sisterlocks were conforming if more women I knew personally had them. As an adult, I looked for natural alternatives, but I didn't want to lose/cut the substantial hair growth I achieved in my relaxed days.

I always liked cornrows, but never felt they were corporately appropriate. So I've micro-braided my hair for many months. Sisterlocks is the next natural answer for me. Honestly, Sisterlocks still look very different from other options. A lot of the black women I work with are still rocking straight human hair weaves or relaxing as much as they can to 'look right' when they walk through office halls. Maybe it would be conformity if corporate America was already full of locked heads.

I recall worrying that getting Sisterlocks might not be a good choice in terms of my long term career goals, but through reading blogs, I've realized many career-oriented women have switched. We honestly need versatile, functional hair, and that's the beauty I feel Sisterlocks represents. That's what drew me to them in the first place.

I don't have them yet, but those are my thoughts.

I know this blog was months ago but I wanted to chime in...

I myself have sisterlocks and they are of bigger size (partially because my hair is thick, and other because they were done by someone uncertified.) I have I guess 350 locks in my hair.

Honestly, I feel like it's a "grass is always greener" situation. I look at your locks and wish I had that many. But at the same time, I have a few locks that are thin or have thinned in an area of it, and I can't imagine all of them that size. I'm scared for these few...

But I also look at "traditional" lock wearers and wish my locks were thicker.

But if you are thinking of joining them, I say go for it. I'm sure the time it takes to maintain them is unbelievable. Overall, I am happy with my thicker bootleg sisterlocks. I feel the life of my locks are safer because they aren't too thin.
