Lock Styles

Sometimes I get sooo jealous of traditional loc wearers and there big hair, especially when Its styled soo cute like my client here. I really would be at a loss without my locs. They have become like my children. I watch them grow and change and hope they'll never leave me, lol. Being natural is soo beautiful, how could anyone think that we are not pretty and well groomed. I do a lot of styling and will be posting up pics of loc styles often. keep checkin and if there is anything you want to know about Sisterlocks, give me a shout at my website www.combmyhair.com

I hate my Sisterlocks?

Ya know, I thought I was liberating women with Sisterlocks until I began to hear comments they would say about their hair. I realized that this is just another level of subjugation for some women. so many of us who have sisterlocks seem to still attach pretty with being 'neat'. "I don't like to see no fuzzy roots" or "my edges are real nappy" is what I would hear often from us Sisterlock girls. I question the self the love for our hair because if with this i still hear tones ,though subtle, of  disdain with our hair. it has to be curled, braids down, twisted out, scarf it, stretched and pinned to be something to admire. Don't get me wrong, I love my hair and the crazy things i do with it but I am at a point where I can see my nappy edges and feel just as polished and beautiful NO CURLS at all.

Laila Ali Speaks Her Mind

Listen to her speak, its time to take back control of who we are. You have responsibility to each other

Muhammad Ali Amazing Interview PT 1

Thanksgiving Sisterlocks

I could say instead of spending all that money on fattening food, you should get your Sisterlocks installed but would be selfish of me now wouldn't it? But I will say this. You have a chance now as the year approaches a close to be better, to do better for your body, your spirit. Stop acting like a drone. You don't have to adhere to tradition if you know its unhealthy for you. When will we see that all that we desire must manifest... While filling your bellies with 'good food' think about what you really want from this life and how you are going to represent life from this point on. Sisterlocks as liberated a lot of female minds from depression, surpression and abuse of their person. Can a hairstyle do all that? Its the first step many women I've had the pleasure of styling.

Personal Style

Lately I have been changing my personal style to reflect comfort and ease. I guess I have always been a tom-boy of sorts, but I finally have said enough with the lace and high heel pumps. I am soooo Marion Jones its not even funny. I love and think an athletic body is very sexy. Not to hippey or busty, just strong and tight. I have been boxing for a few months now and I notice the looks that men give me now, ha ha. Its more of  a damn than a deeeamn! Lol but thats ok. I like what is staring at me from the mirror so if I never seen a pair of open toe sling backs again, I'll be fine. Oh and by the way, my sisterlocks this look good even when I'm sweating. It took me sooo long to be comfortable with who I am and I thought I was there but realized that I was still putting on airs for people. I guess since my B-day is in a few hours I am channeling a new energy. To thine own self be true!

Circulation

Your body needs to have good circulation in order to stay healthy and your hair is no exception. Things that can rob circulation. Tight clothing, high salt, high sugar, lack of exercise, high fat.... If you want growing hair, just start rubbing your scalp daily. Use stimulating oils like cinnamon, black pepper, ginger.... Drink your water and exercise. This is a good start to healthy Sisterlocks(tm)

More Dandruff Remedies

This is a simple one ladies. If you have scaly itchy scalp use HONEY! It is a natural antibacterial product that will kill the yeast that is causing the annoying dandruff. You can make honey water and crush 3 or aspirins into the water, let it dissolve. Aspirin as salic acid and will help kill bacteria too. Then add the honey about 4 or 5 tablespoons to to 3 or 4 oz of distilled water. Use a spray bottle and apply it to your scalp, let it sit for as long as you can, maybe an hour for so, rinse and apply Castor oil, message your scalp and watch it heal,, Hooray!

Scalp Care

Caring for scalp is an issue for most of us, especially Sisterlock wearers. I love products like Apple Cider Vinegar as a hair rinse, I also like Black Walnut tea to get rid of bacteria on the scalp. Essential oils like Lavender, tea tree, are good to fight yeast on the scalp. And I love cinnamon as a blood circulator for the scalp. More blood to the follicles means more nourishment and stronger, longer hair. Don't for get your castor oil for dryness too.

Hair-Whats Sexy About IT!

We all feel better when we look good. But what is sexy when it comes to natural hair. Can we define what is a head turner and what is hum-drum? I think its is your spirit that brings what you do to life. I have seen very fantastically intricate designs that only stylist could appreciate, then there are basic dos paired with the right earrings and shoes that can't seem to quit getting looks. You confidence carries over into your total look. It is not what you say that is the best communicator, it is your facial expression, your eyes...your body tell the story even if you try to lie so don't waste your time pretending to be sexy, you have to own it, own who you are from the top of your head to your pinkie toenail. The sexy you are trying to be will show if you believe it first...

New Look

I am enjoying my sisterlocks more than ever before. I have truly developed a creative spirit towards my hair and I challenge you to do the same with yours. Stop being scared because you thin you don't have a face for certain styles. Unless you've tried them you won't really know. I have been wrong about 95% of the time when I thought a style couldn't compliment me. So experiment with your hair so you can continue feeling good about the choice you made. As I stated in earlier post, I don't have to always do extravagant things to my hair to make me feel pretty. But we all are at different levels of evolution, different stages of hair growth and transformation, so do your best for were you are right now.

Body Care

Another birthday is rolling around for me soon and as I approach the big 40(in 2 years) I am not worried. I feel I look better than I did at 25. I know that I am taking better care of myself and my acceptance of who I am is a big part of that. I am a herb fanatic these days. I take supplements for my hair, includeing seamoss and fenugreek daily. It really works to grow the hair and nourish the body. Go to my new blog to find out more tips on caring for you body...

Best Conditioners for Locs

I tend to lean towards natural fatty oils for conditioning locs instead of traditional conditioners. Regular conditioners leave residue inside the locs because they contain slipping waxes and liquid plastics to detangle the hair. Locs should be conditioned with hot oils like evening primrose, olive and coconut oils, you even use these oils for retightening the locs instead of gels and waxes, conditioners will  weight your locs down over time, causing build-up, thinning of the lock base and bacteria to grow. Use oils instead.

Make the Hair Thicker

I can't think of a better way to get nourishment to the hair follicles than with proper exercise. Blood flow will feed the roots and exercise increases circulation from head to toe. I know I know, you hate to workout but it is really about what level of quality you want to live this life. Unfortunately we do not live in an indigenous village in a remote part of Africa were they only eat berries and organic goodies. We live in polluted environments: air, water, food, so we must do our very best to counteract the effects of the hazards of living here in America. You want your hair to grow! Give it the nourishment it needs from your blood stream. Massage your scalp, drink water, eat some sea moss and kelp, think positive and you will be fine...

Natural Hair Care

I take Sea Moss and Kelp everyday and herbal supplements for my hair and body. Greens grow the hair fast and makes it thicker too.Just because you have locks does not mean that hair care goes out the window. Sisterlocks and weaken and break just like any other type of hair style. Smelly, broken, and lint-filled Sisterlocks are not only unattractive but represents bad hygiene. If we are to dispel connotations about natural hair and locs, then take little time to pamper  and groom your hair. I love Jasmine, Rosemary essential oils, can't forget vanilla too.
Women from other cultures are known for the grace and beauty, what is the American Woman known for. Are we known for our beauty, poise, charity etc.. Check yourself. Hairy chins, bad breath, worn out underwear, sweaty locs etc... No excuse for this ladies. We are the cream of the crop. Ageless, timeless, its time we own the title of Goddesses. Care for you hair as if its a part of you because it is...

Take Care of Yourself

As I said in earlier posts, castor oil is an excellent mositurizer and hair conditioner. I had issues with y hairline thinning and the castor oil is really making a difference in the appearance and the thickness of my hair. Do do mix it with cinnomin essential oil and do a 5 minute massage daily. You really won't need another oil this is the cure all, I call it.

Please start doing whats needed to take care of yourself, as I approach the big 40 I see how important it is for me to take the time to nourish my skin, hair, body etc.. It needs a helping hand now, for the results of neglect are quick and swift with no mercy...

Styling Junkie

I know I've been a victim of it too, always wanting to create a new look with my sisterlocks. I remember when I first started out, I'd be roller setting my hair every other day, adding spritz and oils, scarfing it to keep the frizzy hair in place. I was a fanatic about my hair when it was supposed to be a care free style. It cost me a few locks too. The coloring constantly and the tight pony tails thinned my hair line.

I think we have to learn to love it as it is. If you plait your Sisterlocks in four big braids, no should ask you want your going to do with your hair, Why can't that be considered a hair style? Why are curls, or waves, or updo's considered hair style and no other form. Why not let it hang and just be, thats a style. The "loc" itself it the style. We torture ourselves so much trying make our hair smooth and flat, neat or curly. The benefits sometimes get lost in translation. Most women who have long hair do not do much with it. If you ask them I'd bet they tell you that they style their hair once in a while, follow simple committed hair care regimens, eat right etc.. No fuss...

I am all for being Divalishous but these days, not at the expense of the health of my Sisterlocks. If you are coloring or styling and notice thinning as a result, you need to stop and find some gentler ways to groom your hair, and for color over lapping is usually the reason the locs get weak, you may need to add protein conditioners like Ultra sheen or

Moisture for Sisterlocks

When your Sisterlocks have fully matured and you can start conditioning treatments on a regular basis, I suggest to add castor oil as a  major part of your regimen.  I have found it very conditioning for my own locs and doing a little more research about this Castor oil, I found that its so good for other aliments as well. If you follow my you tube videos I demonstrate exercises for the ovaries and to firm the breasts as well.
Using Castor oil along with a 10 minute breast massage is going to firm the breasts in no time. This oil pentrates into the skin, regenerate skin tissues and removes cysts and tumors. Castor oil backs can be used for topical treatments of the liver and kidneys. A drop of this oil in each eye for about 3 months has been said to cure cataracts too. If you suffer from yeast infections, this oil will take it away in a day or 2.

It will thicken hair and help prevent more hair loss. Put a few drops in scalp and massage for a few minutes, add tea tree oil, or eucalyptus for more circulation.

I mix mine  and apply it daily with a little jasmine essential oil and apply it to my breasts, vagina and hair.
Please try it, yall know I aint for no hype, Im telling you it works!

Elegant Sisterlock Styles?

I listen when people use certain words to describe the style they are looking for. I often her the word elegant thrown around alot. When I ask for elaboration on what that meant to them, it was usually described as "smooth" or  "neat" or "soft" style.

Huh! What does that really mean ladies. I had to examine this for myself as I too have been a victim of indoctrination of what is elegant and soft. So an Afro is not elegant or soft? Spiky twists or Bantu knots are not elegant or soft? Big plaits can't be elegant either.

What are we really saying here? I love my Sisterlocks and I do have a rep for creating unique artistic designs with my hair, definitely not a corporate look. That is the spirit hold. but I have to use this a selling point to sisters who are afraid to deal with their natural hair. I know some sistahs who rock low fades and they are sexy and more elegant than any woman with a chignon.

Sisterlocks serves a purpose, it helps us get used to loving our own hair, but lets not get lost in the translation of the deeper meaning of why we do this. It is for self love right? Or is it for vanity? You decide whether a style is appropriate for a wedding or an afternoon picnic, don't allow ad campaigns or the mothers of your church to do this for you. Be firm in how you want to look with your natural hair, after all its YOURS!

I'm Having a Bad Hair Day, HELP!

Bad hair days happen to the best of us. As fussy as I am about my hair, there just some days I can't get  the hair to do what I want. I usually throw on my cowboy hat and a pair of jeans to keep things moving. Its funny but I get the most looks when I'm not trying to look sexy, ha ha. You can also do a Loc Sock. It made of colorful fabric  that stretches and wraps the Sisterlocks or traditional locs any way you want. I am not a fan of head coverings but you can really and flair to ordinary hang time with you locs.

Special Woman

Vagina Glorification

I put this pic up because if its symbolism of the vagina. We are special and that sugar you have downstairs is the very essence of your being. We throw it away on unworthy people. Day to day we fight for acceptance and validation of our beauty from people who will never care unless we start to care about ourselves. I often said that Sisterlocks and natural hair itself is more of statement thanit is vanity because we have been told that we are not valuable, that our hair is problematic, that we need to alter our genetic structure in order to be in the game.
Make your Sisterlocks or whatever natural style you choose, your purpose for passing on high self esteem to your little girls, they are watching you to know how they should be. They are looking at you as the first symbol of beauty. When you perm, you send a message, make sure your message is with clear intent so no one will don't who you are.

Castor Oil for Sisterlocks!

Benefits of Castor Oil!

Castor oil contains Omega-9 fatty acids which help moisturize the hair and the scalp preventing both from becoming dry.

Does castor oil help hair grow?

To my surprise YES!. Regularly applying castor oil to your scalp and roots to eliminate dry hair and promote regrowth of hair within months. It will also help to thicken hair that is thinning out. This oil is the best for going deep into the skin. It contains anti bacterial properties in it as well.

Helps reduce and prevent damage. Also can hide the appearance of damage while trying to improve your hair's health leading to thicker, fuller hair over time.

You can also experiment with adding some castor oil to your conditioners for a deep conditioning treatment. You'll have to experiment with the amount of castor oil to use to avoid greasy hair. I would start off with a small amount like a teaspoon or so.

Castor oil is versatile in that you can mix it with essential oils. If you are trying to improve circulation I would add cinnomon essential oil. This is a very good oil for blood flow, just a few drops though, cause it can "fire up" the skin pretty good.

I use castor oil on my hair and body as well, my breast in particular. It keeps the breast firm too.

The Standard of beauty for Black Woman!

If you say that perms are a choice for beauty. I will say that you are given the choice  by powers that  be. You are choosing from a standard of beauty that is not yours. You can reason it out all you want to. But I know some woman who have never touched there natural hair. Something is off about this. Are you trying to change your genetic structure? Anyway, I feel it is a responsiblity to not pass on poor self images to our young girls they are looking at us for self worth. Look at yourself and see what message you are sending to her.

Beauty of Egypt

I had to take this picture even though it is a white woman, her costume was sooo regal and off the hook that it gave me goose bumps to think of how splendid the women must have looked back then. I have to admit there are days when I just don't want to fuss with my hair, or putting on makeup, or even wearing a bra!

I wish I had hand maids to take care of all that for me,lol, but alas it is just I (sometimes my daughter when she has pity for me) that tries to put herself together.

But sometimes I feel more sexy when Im NOT trying. I think my hair being Sisterlocked has a lot to do with it too. It is soo care free yet soo naturally beautiful that it allows you the time to "do nothing" but run your fingers through it. I think I'd be bald-headed if I did nt have Sisterlocks. Some days I'll just put a few drops of cedarwood essential oil on my scalp witha  little jasmine and keep moving.

I can also take time for more import things like preparing meals or reading uplifting information . I guess with Sisterlocks your just plain pretty ALL the time...

Permission to be Beautiful

I am still amazed at women still asking permission from husbands to adorn certain hairstyles. Don't you see a problem with someone having that much decision over how you want to represent yourself. Before you met him you had style, you had your own idea of what was attractive so what has happened to you since getting married or having a boyfriend. Does he ask for your blessing to buy things that he feels are useful? Does he check-in with you before hanging with the boys or wearing a new outfit.
You are a companion to your husband not is servant and if you have a relationship were you have o check in with him to wear your own hair, he is probably doing the same thing with his other women too(if you caught that). It really is time for sistahs to support each other and collectively embrace what we consider beautiful. We cannot blame a wandering eye if what he sees in us is an imitation of the real thing(European ideals of beauty I mean).
When will you stand up for yourself! To a man ,Confidence is more attractive than obedience any day of the week just ask all those submissive women if doing what he asks you  to do will keep him at home and in your bed alone. To wear your natural hair is a statement to the world that you are perfect as you are and how the creator(your mother) made you. Don't ask for what you desire, take it! That is your right!

long to short. Sisterlocks without a scissor

2 Years with Sisterlocks

This is Wandi, one of my favorite clients, she is sweet as pie. And our baby (her sisterlocks) are 2 years old now. So a dye job and a few inches later, we have a very stylish natural sister who totally loves her hair. She can't wait for her hair to reachmy length. Patience, patience I say everytime I retighten her hair. Look at old photos and you will see the progress. She has been cute at every stage. I think thats why I love sisterlocks so much. You just look so damn cute right from the very start. Join Us....

Bored with Sisterlocks

There is really no reason for being bored with your Sisterlocks. The styling options are endless. I do playful, funky, conservative, whatever. I can become someone totally different for a day just by changing my hair style. Do be afraid to experiment with you look, you may surprise yourself. Look, I use to be afraid to wear my hair up because I though my face was too long but when I started playing around with styles I realized it was just a matter of creating volume in places to make my face look more rounded. Ex. Taking away volume from the side of the head makes it appear more narrow, adding weight to the sides expands it outward. Its an easy fix.
Love your Sisterlocks!

Healthy Sisterlocks

Healthy Sisterlocks starts with what you put in your mouth. If you are a smoker, you are choking every part of your body from your hair follicle to your blood cells. Oxygen feeds or delivers nutrients to your entire body. Oils, butters, and tonics improve appearance of the hair. But to grow strong hair comes form the inside. Do your hair a service and start drinking clean water(oxygen) and eating clean food(also rich in oxygen). Your hair will respond to the nourishment you give it and it will grow healthy and strong. Greens, Greens and more Greens! Supplementation is key for our soil, sadly, is depleted. So feed the soil which is your flesh and you will look the way you want to look, young and beautiful and disease-free.
Good Life!

Be In Love With You

We are living in TRUTH times. What you think about yourself manifests very quickly whether it be through illness, depression. You were who you are on the outside but think its well hidden. Slouchy shoulders, weak vocal tone, no eye contact, procrastination, excuses, complaining are all products what what you feel deeply about yourself.

How do you change the way you feel about yourself your life. Easy!
You magnify the positive!
Sounds easy right! But most of us spend the better part of the day thinking or worrying about some aspect of our lives. And  I am not saying that what you may be going through is not trying, you may have a legit reason to be worried or upset. What I am saying is that if you shift you focus to what is positive in your life that par will expand. anything you think about often will grow. Just as you water plants and give them sunlight to grow healthy and strong. You are giving that plant your focus, your energy.

It is the same for your life. Tell the one you love how much you care and the one that hates you becomes a distant thought. Treasure the moments. Be a mirror for what you want to receive. If you want love then be love and you will always have love....

Your True Self

"be like water"-Bruce lee
I agree with this quote. It means to flow not be ridged in thinking to transform yourself as needed. You will not be the same next year as you are now. You may be better you may be worse, but it is your direction of the flow of your own water that will determine where you go, how fast you go, how hard you go etc..

You life is your own as is your hair. Do not fear change, why waste time fearing change when it will happen anyway. The trick it to direct the change to benefit you right now.

Everyday you get a new chance. An opportunity for a brand new start, a brand new you.

The Problem... Is Yesterday
You keep living in it, thinking that today will automatically be like it was yesterday. No my sistah, today you are smarter, older, wiser and farther along in your journey than you were yesterday. Your more capable in task and deed today.

Will you take advantage of the gift of today?

Fear of Your Hair

I had an interesting consultation yesterday. A young lady who I'll call Flower wanted to get her hair sisterlocked. She said she had made numerous appointments in the past and would always cancel at the last minute. I asked her why she never went through with it ad she explained to me about the fear of going natural and nt looking attractive even though she saw countless Sisterlock pictures and read blogs like mine. She was just afraid to start them. And she proceeded to them me that she will cry while she gets her installation, its a sure bet she'll need Cleanex.

Wow!
I got to thinking about my transition to Sisterlocks and the fears I had before I decided to take the step and the question of why most of us are so afraid to morph over to locs or natural hair styles of any kind.
My take on this is that it is a death in a sense.
The You that you thought you were has to leave. All the security blankets of long straight hair. It really is going against what is socially acceptable as beauty and it scares us to death. We become children again as we learn and understand how to treat our natural hair, how to adorn it, wash it etc..

For some, they have never even felt the texture of there own hair, for mom gave her perms ince she was 6 years old.

I can't say it enough. We are beautiful women here in the West, away from our culture, our language, our food, our intellect, our marraiges, our government and I can go on and on.

We don't even trust in what we say we believe. If a diamond takes millions of years to become a diamond then how can the bible time line be true. These things we have been force to believe just as we have been forced to think that our hair is Course, Kinky,Nappy, Hard, Unruly etc..

Save your tears... No one cares.... Free Yourself... Be the best AS YOU!!

Taliah Wahjid World Natural Hair Show

Hi ladies, I just wanted to say a few things about the Taliah wadjid; World Natural Hair Show. It was a wonderful experience for me. I did models for the fashion show segment and was asked to model for the show too. Wow! That was totally unexpected but I am happy for the experience. I was so nervous about walking that 60 foot runway (in high heels) Argh! I kept praying that my knees wouldn't buckle under me. I am an earth chick slash diva.....Ha Ha I can so liptick earrings and wifebeaters all day long curse the French for making High Heel Shoes!

Anyway, the people were wowed by the show I feel. I remember walking out onto the runway and as I started to walk I heard people gasping and cheering for me. Thats when my queasing stomach went away and I channeled Tyra Banks all the way down that runway. This was definitely the best Natural Hair Show so far and I have been to all of them.

Thanks to all my loving sistahs who recognized me from my tutorials on You Tube. You felines really made a sistah feel my message means something and I will continue giving you all best that I have as a sistah.

Thanks Taliah for allowing be to show the world that natural hair is beautiful. Pics coming soon(I promise)

Keep Light Weight Locs

How to keep your locks soft and light weight is really about eliminating products. We gloss, condition, hydrate, grease etcc.. But you have to remember that Sisterlocks and traditional locs are like cups. They absorb everything its easy for buildup to weight it down. Use light weight products. Instead of using grease for an itchy scalp, use lavender or tea tree or cedarwood essential. Its lighter and it works. For tightening grooming locs, instead of beeswax or gels use honey or aloe vera gel. These work so much better and are water soluble.

Movement

The month is speeding by. Are you feeling better about yourself, your image? Are you taking the time to represent what you are inspired to represent? A sign of inspiration is a desire that doesn't go away. You've had it for years, some days its weak and some days it is screaming at you.
But it never really goes away. That, ladies, is not a fleeting want, it is "Potential" waiting to be manifested.
If you have always wanted to do something(SIsterlocks, Sing, Education) then now is the time to take some action towards it.
Imagine it as put you hand in blue water to see what treasures you can find. You don't see anything but you know there has to be something pretty down there. After careful examination a treasure appears. Its small and a little dirty, but your going to take it home and clean it off, your going to make a home for it, right?
You go back to the blue water the next day, but this time you are not looking for treasure, you just came to enjoy the experience. You are relaxed and happy and as you walk through the water you spot another treasure like the first one you caught earlier. You hadn't been in the water 5 minutes and you spot another one and another one.
What happened here?
You started to vibrate with the treasure. You held it, cared for it, made a home for it. It essentially became apart of you. So since you had made a personal connection with the treasure, it became easier to spot the next. it became easier to acquire the other ones you saw.
This is how life works. You do something and it becomes easier to do again, you eventually master it. This is Law! You have an inspiration, but you are not sure of the outcome, you move towards it and more help will appear to guild you to it.
It takes movement to make babies
It takes movement to make a meal
It takes movement to sing a song

And it takes movement to become the person you want to be...

Sisterlocks For Generations

So we are in a new year now. Time to get focused and what we want to be,do,experience. I have written down my list of things to master this year and one of them is reaching out to all woman of color and helping them find the gem inside themselves. We have physical laws in this physical world that have to be obeyed. We are out of the natural order of things. The way we think of ourselves has caused dis-eased. And this dis=ease has infected our minds and hearts. But we can change how we feel about ourselves right now, this very moment.

Black and Comely sistahs have a purpose this year. Don't just live to pay bills, or wide snotty noses, or beg complaining husbands. Find out what makes you smile-find out what is worthy of your spirit and your soul. We lack esteem because we often have no goals, or we spend so much time lying to ourselves and we become ashamed because we feel we're frauds. You, Black and Comely woman need not spend another moment in regret of the past for it is gone to the memories of your mind. The question is:How will you rebuild yourself?

Hair, your natural hair is a great way to start being "True" to you and it does go further but you can start there. Do your community, your family a service and find out why your ready to go natural, seek out information to empower your decision if you need that. Elephants don't manuals on how to be an elephant so why do we?

It is because of deception and enslavement of the WOMAN! Have you ever asked yourself why Black men do not have an issue with wearing their natural hair but most Black and Comely woman do? Why are we targeted and indoctrinated with this shame of ourselves?
Because we are the vehicle for which all life comes through. Change our thinking and you can change a whole race of people. This is why love starts with you.

Love who you are and your children will love who they are, your children's children and so on. So now it is bigger than you and what you decide to do will affect generations to come.
