My Kitten's Sisterlocks

I am a little sad today. I guess it's because I realize my first born is going up. She looks stunning in her Sisterlocks and it gives be great pride to know that she loves herself and her natural hair. I can only hope that when she reaches adulthood she doesn't throw all our values out the window. She tells me, "Mommy, I am so pretty and my hair looks good!" At 15 years old, she has great self esteem more than I had at her age. I feel like crying because I know that sisterlocks really was a big part of that. Honestly, I had to wrestle with about Sisterlocks. She liked the style but her friends were all permed and she didn't want to feel "different". I explained how it grows the hair healthy and strong, naturally. She knew she could do different styles with Sisterlocks, so that wasn't an issue. Ironically, the biggest issue was the belittling from family and friends (Black Folks). I have somethings to say about that too, but I'll leave it for the next post. In the mean time, I have encouraged my daughter to start a network for teens with Sisterlocks. Its important for them to hold each other up through the process, shows pics of hot styles and so on. If you have a teen with sisterlocks or natural hair, we invite you to send pics and comments to naturesbesinc@aol.com

Gorgeous locks on a gorgeous daughter. She really shines in the photos. You are so right about how much opposition sadly is coming from her peers and or family about her choice to go natural. But she's one stunner and she'll definitely have the last laugh in the end. Peace

What a wonderful post. I pray that my daughter (now 11 years old) will have the self-esteem that your daughter exhudes when she is a teen. Your daughter is beautiful and her locks are lovely.

My daughter doesn't have locks (yet). I'm leaving the decision to lock or not to lock up to her but, chemical straightening is not an option. I think the idea of a network for locked teens is a great idea!

Your daughter is beautiful - and I'm sure as much inside as out. I'll send you some pics of my daughter since she just became a teen this summer, but has been wearing her hair in locks for 4 years. I thank my lucky stars that I found locks in time to give her this gift. As a result, she's never thought that only relaxed hair could be beautiful and she's never expressed an interest in going that route. I hope she can be an inspiration to other young girls.

Hi Salkis,
I know that I am responding to an old post, but I was moved by this post and your efforts as a mother to raise a daughter who is solidly centered in self!

I have my 4 test locks in and am looking forward to my first SL Day (Feb 2-3, '08)!

I wore natural hair for 10 years (boy cut, then 2 strand twist), but wimped out and didn't have the desire to fight the good fight when I got a corporate job at which natural black hair was frowned upon. Well, now I am happily and gainfully self-employed and free to be me! Thank you for being such an inspiration.

Your daughter is beautiful! My daughter who is 7 months into her journey is pleased with her decision to get sisterlocks. I have a real problem though. I was recently laid off from my job and can not afford to continue to take her for retightenings. I wanted to take the retightening class that Sisterlocks offers but they said it can only be taken by someone who actually has the locks and that person must be 18. I only want to learn to maintain my daughter's hair. Do you have any suggestions? I feel stuck.
